Shared Web Hosting
Comparison for 2020

I have decided to create a shared web hosting comparison, because all I found using Google was a ton of affiliated spam websites that only contain the most popular and expensive companies.

Most important assumptions for this compare are:

  • only long term running companies;
  • list is sorted alphabetically, there is no affiliate links;
  • included not only well-known and advertised hosts, but also lesser known reliable ones;
  • only web hosts with English support and website;
  • all hosts must include: latest PHP and MySQL, emails, decent speed of hosted websites;
  • at least 99.9% up time;
  • available payment methods to include: credit card, PayPal, or BTC.

The plans are sorted according to their regular price, which does not include any current discounts, as these are always only applied to a short period of time and do not apply to a long-term service agreement.

Metrics explained:

Disk Space: amount of free space for your files, databases, and emails (1024MB = 1GB). How much space do you need? For example, fresh installation of WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Presta, and most other popular CMS, will require less than 100MB. Of course, if you upload numerous photos, movies, or sound files, or you send large files through email, then you will need more space. However, most average users won’t even use 1GB, and that is why expensive plans offering 100GB or more are almost never used in 100% of cases.

SSD Disks: more then 100 times faster than HDD disks, if your host uses HDD disks, then your websites will require long loading times. To be honest, at present, don't use a web host that doesn’t use SSD disks, as these can really make a huge difference.

Bandwidth: monthly bandwidth that you are able to use, for example, if you upload 1GB file to your web host, you will use 1GB bandwidth. Your websites visitors also use bandwidth. How much do you need? The main factors to consider are how many visitors you will have to your website and how large are the files they might download. Let's say you have a website with 200 visitors per day, and it is a typical blog with lots of text and 100 images, up to 2MB each. You will use 10-50GB depending on your users’ engagement on your site. However, if you have a website with 10,000 visitors per day, with many large images, say 10MB each, then you might use 500GB of monthly bandwidth allowance.

Sites: this indicates number of domains that you can host. Avoid hosts that allow you to host just one website.

Free SSL: the webhost offers free SSL, which will allow your website to use secure https:// web address instead of the lesser secure http:// protocol.

Score: a maximum score is five stars, scores decrease based on significantly lower disk space, bandwidth, or number of allowed hosted websites, followed by competitors with similar prices, or lack of free SSL protocol or SSD disks.

You can sort the table by clicking at the top of any bar.

Ok, no more talking, Let's GO!

*Unknown - the host states that they are unlimited, which is simply not true, as you can easily prove with two observations. Firstly, if you read their ToS (Terms of Service), you will see that unlimited doesn't actually mean unlimited, and it is explained in a rather confusing manner. Secondly, it would be much easier and faster if the host stated that they provide unlimited disk space, and if you were to simply start uploading large files repeatedly, you are likely be suspended eventually. The same applies to "unlimited" bandwidth; upload large files and then delete them repeatedly until you are suspended for "over use of resources". Keep away from hosts that state they offer unlimited access, as you simply don't know how much bandwidth and storage you can actually use.

$10/YEAR plans.

There aren’t many hosts that offer decent plans for $10/YEAR. Most of them offer 1GB of disk space and 10-20GB bandwidth, which is, nonetheless, sufficient for small websites. Only half of them offer SSD disks, however. I have found many hosting offers for $10/YEAR, but they were all offered by hosts that have been in business one year or less, and in most cases they will most likely be out of business once their domain expires.

$20/YEAR plans.

These are definitely a much better choice. Most hosts use SSD disks, a “must have” in my opinion; more hosts offer more space than 1-2GB. Most of them also offer hosting unlimited domains, which is very useful for people who want to create several websites. Most of these hosts also offer 10-20 times more bandwidth than disk space, a good ratio and a reflection of reality.

$50/YEAR plans.

You’ll find better-known companies at this price range. What is surprising for me, however, is that their offers are much less competitive than other hosts. The average disk space in this category is 20GB, although some hosts offer 100GB, or sometimes even 225GB. Most however use slower HDD disks. This would work fine for storing files, but not for running fast websites. The average bandwidth is 300GB, which should fit your needs, even if you have a large website with several thousand visitors per day.

$100/YEAR plans.

The most expensive plan tier is full of well-known, widely advertised hosts. What is very surprising, however, is that many of those companies allow you to host only one or two domains, something very unacceptable at that price. Avoid such offers. Some of them also provide only 5-10GB of disk space, which also isn’t much. At this price, you should get at least 30GB disk space, 600GB bandwidth, SSD disks, free SSL, and an unlimited number of hosted domains.
